Memorial plaque in honor of academician Evgeny Velikhov unveiled in Moscow
A memorial plaque was unveiled in honor of the Honorary President of the Kurchatov Institute National Research Center and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Evgeny Velikhov. The solemn event was held at the House of Scientists of the Kurchatov Institute in Moscow on June 9.
Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute Research Center, noted at the unveiling of the memorial plaque that Velikhov had made a significant contribution to the development and creation of tokamaks, and had also initiated the international ITER project, a mega—plant for the development of thermonuclear energy on an industrial scale.
"By unveiling this plaque now, on the one hand, we are paying tribute to a great man and his memory, perpetuating it. On the other hand, you and I are continuing the great march of the Kurchatov Institute and its leaders, people of global stature," Kovalchuk emphasized.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Krasnikov and Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation Valery Falkov also took part in the unveiling of the memorial plaque.
Velikhov died on December 5 at the age of 89. The academician was buried at the Novodevichy cemetery. Vladislav Panchenko, Vice President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Vice President of the Kurchatov Institute, noted that Velikhov was a great man who was able to think broadly and was passionate about his work.
