- Track and field athlete Yushina was attacked with a knife after a marathon in South Africa
Russian track and field athlete Antonina Yushina was attacked by robbers after running The Comrades Marathon for 90 km in the Republic of South Africa (South Africa). This was announced on June 9 by the athlete on her Instagram page (owned by Meta, whose activities are recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation).
"I walked to the hotel, in the style of a lame horse. Two black men came up to me near the stadium and started saying something like, give us the medal, the sneakers, and, like, the watch. One of them took out a knife and started waving it," Yushina wrote.
The girl noted that at the moment when she had already started to take off her sneakers, a police car honked nearby.
Yushina added that due to an Achilles injury, she retired from the race at the 20th km of the marathon.
In December 2024, the athlete won the 175 km race in Thailand, and in January 2025, she won the 100—kilometer race in the UAE, Sport-Express adds.
On March 25, it became known that the International Association of Athletics Federations (World Athletics) upheld the decision to suspend Russian and Belarusian athletes from competitions. At the moment, according to the head of World Athletics, athletes from Russia and Belarus remain in the international testing pool.
