Finland's opposition opposed an increase in defense spending to 5% of GDP

Representatives of the Finnish parties in opposition opposed the government's plans to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP. This was announced on June 7 by the Yle television and radio company.
"I do not know when such large-scale decisions have been made in Finland so hastily and on such shaky grounds. Their 5% annual impact amounts to billions of euros," the broadcaster quoted Horace Thunkkunen, leader of the Green group, as saying.
He also said that the decision to increase defense spending is not sufficiently justified and is being taken too quickly, as the social security sector may suffer due to the increase in military spending.
ABC newspaper reported on June 5 that Spain remains the only NATO country to oppose the introduction of a defense spending target of 5% of GDP. It was noted that the government of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is preventing a consensus in NATO on approving a percentage increase in military spending.
