- Switzerland pointed to the EU's inability to resolve the issue of refugees from Ukraine
The presence of Ukrainian refugees in European countries may lead to a conflict in the European Union (EU), whose authorities cannot determine their legal status. This was reported on June 7 by the Swiss newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung (NZZ).
"Brussels fears that Ukrainians will move to those EU countries where conditions are most favorable for them. This will inevitably lead to conflict between the member states of the union," the article says.
According to the publication, after the outbreak of the military conflict, about 4.3 million people from Ukraine received temporary protection status in EU countries. Recently, the European Commission (EC) proposed extending it once more, until 2027, although this status is usually valid only for three years. Currently, the majority of Ukrainian refugees in Europe still do not know what their future will be in the medium term.
"Legal uncertainty puts Ukrainians at a disadvantage in the labor and housing markets. <...> Accepting Ukrainians through the asylum system and transferring them to refugee status is not a solution. <...> There are not enough administrative resources to process such a number of applications," writes NZZ.
On June 4, Politico reported that the European Commission plans to extend the temporary protection program for Ukrainian refugees until March 2027. At the same time, they are starting to develop a plan for the return of Ukrainians back to Ukraine. After, on June 6, the publication "Country.ua" noted that according to data from the macroeconomic and monetary survey of the National Bank, the number of Ukrainian refugees abroad exceeded 6.9 million people. Since the beginning of 2025, about 100 thousand people have left the country.
