Lithuanian President urges to disconnect all Russian banks from SWIFT

The West needs to tighten sanctions against Russia, including disconnecting all remaining banks in the country from the international SWIFT system. This opinion was expressed by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda on Saturday, June 7.
"Otherwise, they will consider us weak and believe that Europe is not ready to make bold decisions," Bild quoted the president as saying.
Nauseda also proposed to impose restrictions on key energy companies that fill the Russian budget. In his opinion, these measures are necessary to increase pressure on Moscow.
The President also stressed that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz had threatened Russia with sanctions, but had not imposed them, "thereby undermining Europe's credibility."
Dmitry Birichevsky, director of the Department of Economic Cooperation at the Russian Foreign Ministry, said on the same day that the European Union (EU) continues to impose new sanctions against Russia, despite its own economic losses. According to him, the EU is adding new restrictions, because "otherwise it will lose face." The diplomat stressed that the economic situation in some European countries continues to deteriorate amid the sanctions policy.
