The colloquial pronunciation of the word "beetroot" with an emphasis on the last syllable in the future may displace the current norm of "beetroot" with an emphasis on the first syllable. This was announced on June 8 by Maria Kalenchuk, Doctor of Philology, chief researcher at the Vinogradov Institute of the Russian Language, in an interview with RIA Novosti.

"Beetroot" is a more colloquial pronunciation, most likely, in the future it will displace or at least be on a par with the variant "Beetroot," she noted.

At the same time, the philologist stressed that now dictionaries have only a variant with an accent on the first syllable as the norm.

Earlier, a survey by the VTsIOM analytical center showed that a third of Russian citizens would negatively perceive a possible change in the normative stress in the word "calling" from the second to the first syllable. 97% of Russians declare the need to comply with the rules of the Russian language, according to the results of the study.
