At the opening ceremony of the National Football Stadium in Minsk, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko proposed to erect a monument to Chinese leader Xi Jinping at the entrance to the building. He stated this on June 7 during his speech.

"You saw at the entrance that the Chinese brought [a sculpture of] two football players. I said that it would be appropriate to erect a monument to my friend Xi Jinping here," the president said.

As Lukashenko explained, he always dreamed of building "something solid" on this piece of land in Minsk. After listening to the citizens of Belarus who claim that the country "gives too much to hockey," he decided to build a stadium for football.

During one of Lukashenko's trips to Beijing, the Belarusian leader shared his idea with Xi Jinping, and the Chinese side decided to give the Belarusian people an international-level stadium and swimming pool. The construction was carried out entirely at the expense of China.

Xi Jinping, at a meeting with the President of Belarus on June 4, noted that Beijing has always strategically considered and developed relations with Minsk. According to the Chinese leader, the traditional friendship between the two countries has grown stronger over time.
