In St. Petersburg, police officers detained a group of fraudsters who hacked pages on the Gosuslugi portal in order to steal money. This was reported on May 7 in the press center of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

"Employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region suppressed the activities of a criminal group, whose members gained access to citizens' accounts on the Gosuslugi portal in order to steal funds," the TASS press center reported.

It is clarified that the attackers purchased previously used SIM cards and used special programs to find out which numbers they used to register for Public Services. After that, the scammers hacked into other people's accounts and obtained the full personal data of their owners.

Having obtained other people's data, the attackers applied for loans, and also ordered various goods on marketplaces. After that, the suspects resold them, and divided the money among themselves.

Earlier, on May 31, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation warned that fraudsters began to force people to call them themselves by numbers that portray "technical support" for "Public Services." The department explained that a letter is sent to a potential victim's e-mail or messenger, informing them of "unlawful access" to "Public Services." The text of the letter calls for contacting "technical support", the number of which belongs to the attackers.
