- The Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation announced the increased desecration of Soviet memorials in Germany
There has been a sharp upsurge in acts of vandalism and desecration of Soviet war memorials in Germany. This was stated on June 5 by Alexander Volgarev, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), at a meeting of the Permanent Council of the organization.
"Alarming trends are emerging in Germany, which has seen a sharp spike in cases of desecration and vandalism of Soviet military graves and memorials. Let us remind you that on May 6 of this year, unknown persons cut ribbons from wreaths that Russian and Belarusian diplomats laid near the former concentration camp in Dachau," he is quoted as saying on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
The diplomat also noted that the destruction of monuments to Soviet soldiers and the rehabilitation of Nazis has become the norm in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. He noted that the authorities in the Baltic states "aggressively inculcate the cult of the Nazis and their accomplices."
Volgarev added that the Moldovan authorities, led by President Maia Sandu, are trying to destroy the Soviet legacy and erase an entire stage from the country's history. According to him, Chisinau is also engaged in combating the celebration of Victory Day.
In addition, the deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation also noted that instead of the previously observed careful and respectful attitude of the Czech Republic towards monuments and victims of Nazism, cases of struggle against Soviet memorial sites have recently become more frequent.
"The apotheosis of this shameful campaign was the dismantling of the monument to Ivan Stepanovich Konev, the symbol of Victory and liberation of Czechoslovakia and its capital, Prague, from Nazi occupation, and the feat of the Red Army, which, together with the soldiers of General Ludvik Svoboda's 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps, made a decisive contribution to defeating the Nazis," the diplomat stressed.
On April 30, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Germany's ban on victory symbols in the Great Patriotic War and World War II was a road to the abyss for the country. She noted that Germany should turn to the lessons of all the wars it has unleashed and teach this to the younger generation.
Earlier, on April 8, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that attempts were being made in the West to belittle the role of the USSR in the victory in World War II and justify the crimes of the Nazis. The minister added that European countries undermine the principle of outlawing Nazism.
