The nutritionist named the main risks of daily consumption of mayonnaise

Mayonnaise remains one of the most popular sauces in Russian cuisine, but its regular use can be harmful to health. Elena Truskova, a general practitioner and nutritionist, told Izvestia about this on June 6.

"Traditional mayonnaise consists of vegetable oil, eggs, mustard, salt and sugar. The store—bought product additionally contains preservatives, flavor enhancers and colorants," the specialist explained.

The expert noted that the benefits of mayonnaise are the content of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K, which provide a feeling of satiety. However, the main harm is associated with high calorie content and the use of low-quality vegetable oils.

"Manufacturers often use sunflower and soybean oils rich in omega-6 fatty acids. Their excess contributes to systemic inflammation, including in the vascular walls, which can accelerate the development of atherosclerosis," Truskova warned.

The nutritionist also drew attention to other risks. Thus, preservatives and flavor enhancers can cause allergic reactions and disrupt the intestinal microflora. The high salt and sugar content contributes to edema and weight gain.

The specialist recommended limiting the use of mayonnaise to people with cardiovascular diseases, gastrointestinal problems and overweight. The store-bought product is contraindicated for children.

"Homemade mayonnaise made from quality ingredients is a safer alternative. You can use olive oil, reduce the amount of salt and sugar, and eliminate chemical additives," the doctor advised.

For those who want to completely abandon the traditional recipe, Truskova offered two options for healthy sauces: based on Greek yogurt with mustard and lemon juice or avocado with herbs and spices.

"The main rule is to cook in small portions and consume them throughout the day. This will help to preserve the taste of the dishes without harm to health," concluded the nutritionist.

Earlier, on April 11, therapist, nutritionist, nutritionist Maria Chernyaeva warned that ketchup with mayonnaise is the most dangerous mixture to eat. So, she said that the calorie content of ketchups and tomato sauces depends on the composition. The shorter it is, the fewer carbohydrates, and, consequently, the calorie content.
