Russians' inflation expectations are formed primarily from changes in the cost of consumer goods, and their prices are rising faster than inflation. This was stated on June 6 by the head of the regulator, Elvira Nabiullina, answering a question from Izvestia about what could change this situation.

She noted that people's inflation expectations are formed primarily from how the actual prices of the goods they buy more often change. And these are food products for the vast majority of the population.

"I have already said, and I will confirm it once again, that we are concerned that the population's inflation expectations remain at elevated levels. They are practically not decreasing. <...> Because people don't buy smartphones and televisions every day, which we talked about now, that either the price rate is simply low or it is decreasing. They buy food and groceries every day. If prices are rising at a higher rate there, then, of course, this will largely reform inflation expectations, and now they are really growing at a higher rate than inflation," she said.
