Multiple sclerosis can develop almost asymptomatically for a long time, manifested only by minor changes in well-being. Galina Chudinskaya, a neurologist at Medicine JSC (Academician Roitberg Clinic), told Izvestia about this on June 7.

"In the early stages, patients may experience increased fatigue, feeling worse in the heat, short-term numbness of the extremities, or blurred vision. These symptoms are often attributed to stress or overwork," the specialist explained.

According to the neurologist, the disease is usually manifested by severe neurological disorders when the lesion affects areas of the brain with low compensatory capacity. This may be a sudden decrease in vision, double vision, weakness of the facial muscles or numbness of the extremities.

"In such cases, patients turn to an ophthalmologist, and after an MRI scan, multiple lesions are often found," Chudinskaya noted.

The expert emphasized that modern diagnostic methods make it possible to identify the disease before the appearance of obvious symptoms. Sometimes the foci of multiple sclerosis are discovered accidentally during an examination for another reason. In such cases, you can start treatment at the earliest stage.

Chudinskaya noted that screening for multiple sclerosis is not carried out among the entire population due to the rarity of the disease. However, if a young person regularly visits a neurologist with similar complaints, it is worth considering the possibility of an in-depth examination, according to the specialist.

"Indeed, the early signs of multiple sclerosis can be invisible and almost imperceptible. But careful attention to oneself, a qualified assessment by a doctor and modern diagnostic methods make it possible to identify the disease before it causes a significant blow," the doctor concluded.

Earlier, on May 27, neurologist Vitaly Akimov told Izvestia which groups of people are most susceptible to multiple sclerosis. According to the doctor, the risk group includes young women from 12 to 40 years old, with a peak onset of the disease at 17-19 years old, with close relatives with multiple sclerosis, living in northern latitudes, who have had viral infections.
