Hutsul linked the criminal prosecution to calls for the restoration of relations with the Russian Federation

The head of the Gagauz Autonomy of Moldova, Evgenia Gutsul, told Izvestia on June 6 that she was being tried for calling for the restoration of relations with Russia. According to her, this does not suit the Chisinau authorities.

"The judge's biased attitude towards us is obvious. This is a contract case. I'm being judged because I'm a bashkan (chap. — Ed.) of Gagauzia. Before the meeting with [Russian President] Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, they didn't mention me or this criminal case," she said.

Hutsul recalled that the only mention of her case occurred after her victory in the elections of the head of Gaguzia. At that time, Veronika Dragalin, who served as head of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, offered her a deal: in exchange for the cancellation of the criminal case, she had to give up her mandate.

In addition, Bashkan said that she had filed a complaint about a violation of articles of the Criminal Code in connection with granting her the status of an accused. She explained that her first searches took place in 2022. According to the Criminal Code, she was supposed to be charged within five days, but this was not done.

A rally in support of the Hutsuls is currently taking place outside the courthouse in Chisinau. The protesters are holding placards and chanting: "Evgenia, we are with you."

On the same day, it was reported that the court rejected the defense's request to conduct a financial examination of the charges in the Hutsul case. It is clarified that she is accused of involvement in financial irregularities in the financing of the Shor party.

On June 3, Hutsul stated that the charges against her of involvement in financial irregularities had not been confirmed by experts in the field. No financial examination was conducted in relation to the case.
