The visit of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to the United States in order to convince American leader Donald Trump of Washington's more active participation in protecting and supporting Ukraine has failed. This was reported on June 6 by The New York Times (NYT).

"Merz received a warm welcome, but he cannot enlist Trump's support for Russia <...> and in a more active role to protect Ukraine," the article says.

It is noted that Merz also called on Trump to exert pressure on the Russian side, but did not receive proper consent.

According to the newspaper, during the meeting, the Chancellor and the American president also discussed the imminent settlement of the Ukrainian conflict.

The day before, Merz held talks with Trump in the Oval Office. During the meeting, the leaders of the two countries discussed many issues, including support for Ukraine.

On June 4, Bloomberg reported that Merz does not intend to enter into disputes with the American president at a personal meeting, unlike Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. It is clarified that before the meeting, the German Chancellor was advised not to interrupt Trump and let him speak most of the time.
