US import duties pose a threat to the German economy. This was announced on June 5 by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

"These tariffs, in our opinion, really threaten our economy," he said in an interview with Fox News channel.

Merz added that Berlin is looking for ways to reduce them. Germany and the United States are expected to appoint representatives to conduct the relevant negotiations.

On May 23, US President Donald Trump threatened to impose import duties of 50% on the European Union due to the lack of progress. He later postponed the entry into force of this decision.

On June 2, Bloomberg reported that the EU is preparing for another round of trade negotiations with the United States and warned that it could accelerate retaliatory measures if the head of the White House follows through on his threats to impose duties.
