Russian Deputy Security Council Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said on June 5 that US President Donald Trump hinted at the Nazi tendencies of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz after his words about the Normandy landings.

"Trump openly hinted at the Nazi tendencies of the chancellor, noting that the Normandy landings must have been unpleasant for him. Well done! For a moment, the chancellor felt like a Bandera nit during his visit to the Oval Office," Medvedev said in a message on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

During a press conference with Merz at the White House on June 5, Trump joked about the historical significance of the Allied landings in Normandy, suggesting that the anniversary of this event was "not the most pleasant day" for Germany. This happened after Merz mentioned that June 6 would mark the 81st anniversary of Operation Overlord, during which the Allied landings in Normandy took place.
