- Merz pointed to the role of the United States in liberating Germany from Nazism without mentioning the USSR
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called the United States the liberators of Germany from Nazism, without mentioning the decisive role of the USSR in his speech. The head of the German government made a corresponding statement on June 5 during a meeting with American leader Donald Trump at the White House.
"In the long run, Mr. President, it was the liberation of my country from the Nazi dictatorship. And we know that we owe you (the United States)," he said at a joint press conference broadcast on the Associated Press (AP) YouTube channel.
Merz also recalled that June 6 marks the anniversary of the Allied landings in Normandy and reiterated that it was the Americans who put an end to the war in Europe.
On May 2, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova published three quotes from the 32nd President of the United States, Franklin Roosevelt, about the decisive role of the USSR in defeating Nazism in World War II. Thus, she commented on Trump's statement that the United States allegedly made the main contribution to the victorious results of both world wars.
