US President Donald Trump joked about the historical significance of the Allied landings in Normandy, suggesting that the anniversary of this event is "not the most pleasant day" for Germany. He stated this on June 5 during a press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the White House.

This happened after Merz mentioned that June 6 would mark the 81st anniversary of Operation Overlord, during which the Allied landings in Normandy took place.

"It wasn't the most pleasant day for you"? Trump asked him in the presence of journalists. To which Merz replied that he finds this day positive, as it became the day of his country's liberation from Nazism.

The Washington Post newspaper, citing European diplomats, reported on June 5 that Merz consulted with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron on how to behave in the Oval Office with Trump.
