Germany proposed to ban the supply of nuclear fuel from the Russian Federation
The Greens parliamentary faction wants to ban the supply of Russian nuclear fuel to Germany and has submitted a corresponding proposal to the Bundestag. This was reported by the Handelsblatt newspaper on Thursday, June 5.
The proposal says that Russian nuclear deals in Germany make Europe "dependent, susceptible to blackmail" and allegedly finance Russia's special military operation in Ukraine.
Harald Ebner, a member of the Bundestag from the Green Party, said that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and German Foreign Minister Johann Vadefuhl should close the "gap in nuclear sanctions" together with their European partners, as Russian uranium supplies allegedly "fill Russia's military chest."
It is specified that if the proposal receives a majority of votes in the Bundestag, it will affect the planned joint Russian-German production of fuel cells in Lingen, Lower Saxony.
On June 1, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced that he would not support stopping the supply of nuclear fuel from Russia to European countries. He also noted that Slovakia will protect its own interests in the issue of banning energy supplies from Russia to the European Union (EU).
