Pentecost, or the feast of the Holy Trinity, is one of the most important days of the church year, falling on the 50th day after Easter. In 2025, it falls on June 8th. Believers on this day turn to God with requests for spiritual support, strengthening in faith, forgiveness of sins and mercy. Izvestia publishes the most powerful prayers, as well as their meaning.

To whom and for what do they pray on Whitsunday

The Feast of the Holy Trinity completes the Easter cycle and symbolizes the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, which became the spiritual birth of the Christian Church. Since ancient times in Russia, candles were lit in churches on this day and they prayed not only for the health of the living, but also for the repose of the souls of the departed, especially on the Saturday before Trinity — on parents' day.

In those days, people turned to God with requests for peace in the house, a good harvest, the health of children and a successful marriage. Special attention was paid to prayer for the protection and fertility of crops, livestock and land — all that was the basis of peasant life. Today, the requests of believers have become broader in content, but the essence remains the same — Christians still pray for peace, love, healing, strengthening in faith, and ask for help in overcoming life difficulties.

On Whitsunday, it is also customary to ask for personal happiness (but not for material benefits), such as the birth of children, marriage, and the return to God of those who have lost their faith. Christians turn to the Lord and the apostles with prayer for their relatives, loved ones, the church and the country. Prayers should be said on your knees.

On this day, hope revives in the souls of believers, because the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles symbolizes not only the foundation of the Church, but also the beginning of a new life — spiritual, meaningful, warmed by grace.

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen: the meaning and text of the prayer

The phrase "In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen" is the beginning of every Orthodox prayer, which embodies faith in the trinity of God. This solemn trinitarian formula is used in divine services, sacraments, and in personal prayer practice.

She expresses reverence for the One God, who manifests himself in three persons. God the Father is the Creator and source of life, God the Son is Jesus Christ, who came into the world to save mankind, and God the Holy Spirit is the grace and power that works in the world and in the heart of the believer.

Every time an Orthodox Christian utters these words, he entrusts himself to the Divine will, recognizes its primacy, and invites the Holy Trinity to be present in his thoughts, actions, and feelings. It is an act of spiritual concentration in which everything human — passions, doubts, vanity — recedes before the eternal and unchangeable. The phrase sanctifies not only prayer, but also any important action, whether it's starting a business, blessing food, or saying goodbye to the deceased.

One of the most frequently said prayers, "Our Father," sounds like this: "Our Father Who is in heaven! Hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we also forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen to that."

The main prayer for Trinity is: "Holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, cleanse our sins. Vladyka, forgive our iniquities. Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities, for Your name's sake. Amen to that." This prayer combines repentance, supplication and hope. She addresses all three Persons of the Holy Trinity, recognizing their unity and power to act in human life.

How and why do they pray for marriage on Whitsunday?

Orthodox girls have long associated Holy Trinity Day with the hope of love and starting a family. The tradition of praying for marriage on this particular holiday dates back to the days when Trinity was considered a blessed time to start a new life. After all, it was on this day that the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles, giving them strength and inspiration.

The prayer for marriage on Trinity Day is a request not just for love, but for spiritual unity with a partner, for a strong Christian union. The girls ask God to send a life partner with whom they can share faith, good deeds, trials and joys.

Kneeling prayers for Trinity: what is it, when and where it is read, text

A special feature of the Trinity is in the service of the Trinity Vespers, which ends with the reading of three kneeling prayers. This is the first kneeling service after Easter, a time when the church allows prostration again, symbolizing humility before the greatness of the Deity.

The first prayer is penitential: in it, believers confess their sins and ask for mercy. Its text in Russian translation sounds like this:

The Feast of the Holy Trinity is a reminder of the mystery of God's presence and how the Holy Spirit can transform hearts. This is a day when prayer becomes especially important. "Holy Trinity, have mercy on us" is not just a word, but a response to Divine love, which does not leave a person in joy or sorrow.

Below is the text of the most powerful prayer that is read on the holiday.:

"O Most pure, immaculate, beginningless, invisible, incomprehensible, unsearchable, unchangeable, irresistible, immeasurable, merciless Lord, Who alone hath immortality, dwellest in an unapproachable light, Who created heaven, earth, and the sea, and all that is created in them, who gives to all what is asked before, we pray to Thee and call upon Thee, O Master Lover of mankind., the Father of our Lord and God, and Savior Jesus Christ, who descended from heaven for us humans and for our salvation and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and Mary the Ever-Virgin and Most Glorious Theotokos. By teaching us first with words, and then showing us by deeds, when He endured saving suffering, He gave us, Your humble, sinful and unworthy servants, an example of offering prayers with bowing of the head and knees for our own sins and for the sins of the ignorance of the people.

O Most merciful and Loving One, hear us on whatever day we call You, especially on this day of Pentecost, on which, after the ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ to heaven, when He sat at the right hand of You, God and Father, and sent down the Holy Spirit upon His holy disciples and Apostles, Who rested on each of them, and they were all filled with His inexhaustible grace and began to speak in other tongues about Your great deeds and prophesy.

So now hear us who pray, and remember us who are humble and condemned, and free our souls from captivity, having Your own compassion interceding for us. Accept us, who fall down to You and cry out: "We have sinned!" We have been abandoned to You from our mother's womb, and You are our God from our mother's womb. But since our days have passed in vanity, we have been left without Your help and without any justification, however, boldly hoping for Your mercy, we cry out: "Do not remember the sin of our youth and ignorance, and cleanse us from our secret deeds; do not reject us in old age, do not forsake us when our strength is poor; before we return to earth, make us worthy to turn to You and pay attention to us with favor and mercy; measure our iniquities with Your mercy; Set up the abyss of Your mercy against the multitude of our transgressions; look from Your holy height at Your people standing around and waiting for abundant mercy from You.

Visit us in Your goodness, deliver us from the violence of the devil, and establish our lives by Your holy and sacred laws. Entrust Your people to your faithful guardian angel; gather us all into Your Kingdom, grant forgiveness to those who trust in You; absolve them and us of our sins, purify us by the action of the Holy Spirit, and destroy the enemy's machinations against us."

Another prayer is a petition for the gift of the Holy Spirit, as the apostles once did.:

"Lord Jesus Christ our God, who has communicated to men Thy peace and the gift of the All-Holy Spirit, while still on earth and being with us, always giving it to the faithful as an inalienable inheritance, but who has especially clearly sent down this grace to His disciples and apostles and armed their mouths with tongues of fire. Through them, we, the entire human race, having heard and perceived God in our own language with our own ears, were illuminated by the light of the Spirit, and we were freed from error as from darkness, and through the distribution and supernatural action of palpable feelings and fiery tongues, we learned to believe in You and were enlightened to recognize You as God with the Father and the Holy Spirit in all things. a single Deity, and power, and authority. You, the radiance of the Father, the unchanging and unshakable mark of His being and nature, the source of wisdom and grace, open my sinful mouth and teach me how to pray and what to pray for. You know the great multitude of my sins, but Your mercy will overcome their immeasurability.

For behold, I stand before You with fear, having plunged the despair of my soul into the depths of Your mercy: guide my life as a pilot, in a word, all creation by the ineffable power of Your wisdom, guiding the quiet harbor of those carried by the storm, and show me the way I should go. Communicate the spirit of Your wisdom to my thoughts, grant the Spirit of reason to my folly; By the spirit of fear of You, overshadow my deeds, renew the right Spirit in my bowels, and by the Spirit of dominion strengthen the precariousness of my way of thinking, so that, guided by Your good Spirit to useful things, I may be worthy every day to keep Your commandments and always remember Your glorious and reproachful the coming of what we have done.

And do not allow me to be seduced by the perishing joys of this world, but strengthen us to the desire to enjoy future treasures. You have said, Vladyka, that whatever anyone asks in Your name, he will receive unhindered from Your co-eternal God and Father; therefore, sinner, on the day of the coming of Your Holy Spirit, I beseech Your goodness: whatever I ask, give it to me for salvation! Yes, Lord, You are a generous and benevolent Giver of all good deeds, as You abundantly give what we ask! You are compassionate and merciful, who have sinlessly become partakers of our flesh, and who lovingly bow your knees to those who bow before You, and who have become the propitiation for our sins! Show Thy mercy, O Lord, to thy people, hear us from Thy holy heaven, sanctify us by the power of thy saving right hand, cover us under the shelter of Thy wings, that thou mayest not despise the works of Thy hands. We sin against You alone, but we also serve You alone.

We do not know how to bow down to another god, nor do we stretch out our hands, Vladyka, to another god. Forgive us our sins and, accepting our kneeling supplications, extend a helping hand to all of us, accept the prayer of all as a pleasant incense received before Your most gracious Kingdom."

In another prayer, the Church prays for the deceased, including those who have not received a Christian burial.:

"An inexhaustibly flowing, life-giving and enlightening Source, a creative Force co-eternal with the Father, who has perfectly accomplished all the economy for the salvation of people, O Christ our God, who has broken the insoluble bonds of death and the locks of hell, who has healed many evil spirits, who has sacrificed Himself immaculately for us, who has sacrificed His most pure body, for no sin. the inviolable and inaccessible, and by this terrible and inexplicable sacrament he gave us eternal life; he descended into hell and broke the eternal bolts, and showed those who sit in darkness the way to return from there; he caught the instigator of evil, the deep serpent with a God-wise bait, and bound him with the fetters of darkness in tartarus, and in the unquenchable fire and in the outer darkness infinitely By Your mighty power You have imprisoned; the great-named Wisdom of the Father, who was a great helper for those who were attacked, who enlightened those who sat in darkness and the shadow of death. You, Lord of the inexhaustible glory and the beloved Son of the Most High Father, eternal Light from eternal Light, Sun of righteousness, hear us as we pray to You, and give rest to the souls of Your servants, our fathers and brothers who died before, and other relatives in the flesh, and all our relatives in the faith, whom we now commemorate, because You have power over everything and You hold all the borders of the earth in Your hand.

O Lord Almighty, God of the fathers and Lord of mercy, Creator of the mortal as well as the immortal race, and of all human nature, which is composed and disintegrated again; Creator of life as well as death, sojourn here and repose there, measuring out the years of the living and setting the time of death, bringing them down to hell and leading them out, binding them with infirmity and liberating them from By the power that arranges the present according to the needs of all and guides the future to the benefit; reviving those stricken by the sting of death with the hopes of resurrection! O Lord of all things, our Saviour God, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of those who are far away at sea, You have revealed to us on this last, great, and saving day of Pentecost the mystery of the holy, consubstantial, co-eternal, indivisible, and non-fused Trinity, and the coming and appearance of Your holy and life-giving Spirit in the form of He poured out fiery tongues on His holy Apostles, and made them the evangelists of our pious faith, and revealed them as confessors and forerunners of true theology.

Even on this final and saving holiday, You have been pleased to accept propitiatory prayers for those held in hell and give us great hopes of sending relief to the deceased from their depressing sorrows and consolation from You! Hear us who are humble and in need of Your compassion, and give rest to the souls of Your servants who have previously fallen asleep in a place of light, in a place of bliss, in a place of joy, from where all pain, sorrow and groaning have departed, and establish their spirits in the mansions of the righteous, and grant them peace and relief, because not the dead will praise You, Lord, it is not those who dare to bring confession to You in hell, but we who are alive who bless You and pray, and we offer propitiatory prayers and sacrifices to You for their souls."

These texts are distinguished by their depth, rigor and penetration. They are read only once a year, namely on Whitsunday.

Earlier, Izvestia told about the history, traditions and signs of Shipovnikov day.
