The US veto of the UN Security Council's draft resolution on an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip is a missed chance to end the bloodshed. This was announced by the Russian Foreign Ministry on June 5.

"Another chance was missed to stop the monstrous bloodshed and famine in Gaza, which killed about 55,000 dead and 125,000 injured Palestinians," the ministry said in a statement on its website.

The Foreign Ministry noted that "breaking the cycle of violence" is possible only through peaceful negotiations, a cease-fire and the release of hostages. The Ministry also stressed the importance of improving the humanitarian situation in the region.

"The American side actually rejected its own plan outlined in the text to achieve a 'deal' between Israel and Hamas," the Foreign Ministry added.

The United States used the right of veto on the draft of the UN Security Council on June 4. It is specified that all 15 members of the organization participated in the voting for the adoption of the draft. Only the American side opposed the resolution, while the rest supported the relevant draft.

Later, Russia's permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, said that the results of the vote on the draft resolution on an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip showed who really wants peace and who continues to play geopolitical games.
