Japan is taking measures to prevent repeated shooting practice incidents without warning civilian vessels near the southern Kuril Islands. This was announced on June 5 by the Secretary General of the Cabinet of Ministers, Yoshimasa Hayashi.

"The Japanese Coast Guard is carefully monitoring security and is working to prevent such situations," the Nikkei quoted him as saying.

It is specified that the patrol boat conducted firing practice on May 23. However, they were cancelled after it became known that the navigation warning had not been issued.

On June 4, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of the Russian Federation protested to Japan over the conduct of firing practice in the open sea near the borders of Russia on the island of Hokkaido. According to the agency, such actions constitute a violation of international law.
