The United Nations (UN) is closely following the negotiations between Russia and Ukraine and is ready to assist in the peaceful settlement of the conflict. This was announced on June 5 by Tom Fletcher, Deputy Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, UN Emergency Relief Coordinator.

"I think we are all closely following the developments <...> When I was in Ukraine, and now in Russia, I promoted the idea of peace — a just peace, a peace that protects the civilian population," he said in an interview with TASS.

According to him, the UN is ready to support the process of peaceful settlement of the conflict, if necessary. Fletcher added that there are many obstacles on the way to a peaceful end to the conflict and expressed hope that they will be overcome.

On June 2, the second round of negotiations between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations took place in Istanbul. Russian presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky said that a memorandum of truce with proposals for a complete ceasefire had been handed over to the Ukrainian side. In addition, the parties agreed on the largest prisoner exchange in the entire special operation.
