Russia's membership in the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) The UN says that the country is overcoming attempts at international isolation from the West. This opinion was shared by Alexei Zudin, a political scientist and senior lecturer at MGIMO University of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, in an interview with Izvestia on June 5.

He stressed that it is necessary to take into account the geopolitical context, which is characterized by unprecedented Western pressure on Russia. Attempts to isolate Russia on the world stage are an important part of this pressure, the political scientist noted.

According to him, in the conditions of unipolar globalization, the role of some international organizations is decreasing, they fall under the influence of the countries of the Western coalition. Nevertheless, the United Nations continues to retain its importance.

"[Russia's membership in the ECOSOC] is an important event that demonstrates that Russia is successfully overcoming Western attempts at isolation in international organizations," Zudin said.

The expert also stressed that the inclusion of the Russian Federation in the ECOSOC speaks to the recognition of other countries of the work of the Russian Federation in the economic and social spheres.

"This inclusion should not be considered only a formal act, it is also an international recognition of the efforts that the Russian leadership is making internally to build an advisory system of interaction with civil society. The UN Economic and Social Council is dealing with this very issue," Zudin stressed.

According to the political scientist, Ukraine was included in the ECOSOC "because of Western ideas about political correctness."

"Ukraine is a crumbling state. It is hardly necessary to talk about any merits in building the structures of a modern state and civil society in Ukraine," the expert concluded.

On June 5, Russia became a member of one of the key UN bodies, the Economic and Social Council, for the period from 2026 to 2028. It is specified that the Russian Federation was nominated from a group of Eastern European states, for which three seats have been allocated in the ECOSOC. Ukraine and Croatia also joined the Council.

On June 3, the UN General Assembly elected new non-permanent members of the UN Security Council. They were Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Latvia and Liberia. Their terms of office will begin in January 2026 and last until the end of 2027.
