When a bee stings, the first thing to do is to carefully remove the sting with tweezers. It is important that you should never squeeze it out with your hands — such actions can lead to an increased allergic reaction. Irina Volgina, Associate Professor of the Department of Therapy at the Medical Faculty of the State University of Education, told Izvestia about this on June 5.

After removing the sting, the specialist recommends treating the bite site with an antiseptic (hydrogen peroxide or chlorhexidine), rinsing with water and applying a cold compress for 15-20 minutes to prevent the spread of edema.

The expert noted that an allergic reaction to a bee sting always occurs, as this is the body's natural response to a foreign protein.

"For some, it will be less pronounced, while for others it will be strong. Usually, the symptoms of an allergic reaction are redness, itching, and swelling at the bite site," Volgina explained.

However, she added that there may be general reactions. The doctor considers Quincke's edema to be dangerous complications — it can develop even with a bite to a limb, allergic urticaria and anaphylactic shock. Signs of anaphylaxis include dizziness, pressure drop, respiratory and cardiac disorders. This condition requires immediate medical attention, as it can be fatal," the specialist explains.

"There should always be antiseptics in the first-aid kit to treat the bite site, antihistamines. If a person knows that he is allergic to honey or other bee products, then there must be a hormonal drug prescribed by an allergist in an injection or inhaler for asthma," the expert clarified.

On May 23, Daniil Shchepelyaev, an immunologist and allergist, told Izvestia what the main risk is when bitten by insects. He explained that some insects can inject venom, like wasps, while others can leave saliva, like midges. In both cases, a pathological immune response of the body is possible.
