On Saturday, on the eve of one of the main Christian holidays, the Holy Trinity, Orthodox believers celebrate the Ecumenical Trinity Parental Saturday, turning their prayers to all those who have completed their earthly journey, regardless of kinship. In 2025, the holiday falls on June 7th. About who is commemorated on this day, as well as what actions are considered unacceptable on the eve of the Trinity — in the material of Izvestia.

Who is commemorated on the Ecumenical Trinity Parents' Saturday, June 7

Trinity Parents' Saturday is one of the most important days of commemoration of the deceased in the Orthodox tradition. This is a special day when ecumenical memorial services are held in churches, and believers pray not only for their relatives, but also for friends and acquaintances, as well as for all Christians who have ever lived, including those whose names are unknown. That is why such a parent's Sabbath is called the Universal Sabbath.

Special attention on this day is paid to prayers for the souls of those who died in the war, the missing, those who died during disasters and natural disasters. Also on Trinity Saturday, prayers are read for those who died suddenly and did not have time to repent, who were not baptized according to church canons. It is allowed on this day to commemorate those who decided to leave this world of their own free will.

The church charter does not prohibit physical labor on this day, but tradition and folk memory advise treating the holiday with respect. If possible, it is worth postponing planting, weeding and any other gardening tasks until the next day.

Putting graves in order on this day is not only a permitted, but also an encouraged matter. Many believers visit cemeteries on the morning of June 7, bring fresh flowers, decorate crosses and tombstones with birch branches and greenery, and light candles.

It is important to remember that cleaning should not become a formal act, it should be accompanied by prayer. But food should not be left on graves — it is better to distribute it to those in need in memory of the deceased.

What not to do on the Universal Parental Saturday before Trinity

Trinity Parents' Saturday is a day of special silence, inner concentration and respect for the memory of the deceased. Any action that could break this silence was considered inappropriate by the ancestors, so a number of strict prohibitions and warnings were established.

Quarrels, anger, swearing and insulting words were considered a particularly grave sin on this day. According to beliefs, the soul of the deceased is able to feel even the slightest negativity coming from the living and suffer from it.

For the same reason, it was impossible to speak ill of the deceased or even think ill of them. People used to say, "If you remember, be silent," meaning that remembering the deceased should be accompanied only by kind words or a silent prayer asking the Lord to grant the soul the Kingdom of Heaven.

Also, loud feasts, weddings, weddings and any kind of entertainment were not held on the holiday. Instead, people tried to gather with their families, remember their loved ones with a modest meal and a quiet conversation. Guessing was strictly forbidden, and any attempts to look into the other world on the eve of the great holiday were considered a challenge to the spiritual order.

Also, according to ancient beliefs, it was forbidden to swim or even approach the water, especially if you were alone. At this time, according to popular beliefs, the "mermaids" became more active — the souls of girls who drowned and did not die by their own deaths. To avoid meeting them, people avoided reservoirs and forbade children to play by the river.

When leaving the cemetery, you couldn't say goodbye. In Russia, they believed that such words could become prophetic. Instead, they said "goodbye", mentally asking the soul of the deceased not to hold a grudge and to be by his side in a difficult moment.

Earlier, Izvestia reported on the history and traditions of the special national holiday Semik.
