The first Canadian to travel in space, politician Marc Garneau, has died at the age of 76. This was reported on June 4 by the CBC television channel, citing a statement from his wife, Pam Garneau.
"Mark spent his last days with the same strength, clarity and nobility — qualities that accompanied him all his life," the TV channel quoted his wife as saying.
She also clarified that Garneau died surrounded by his family after a short illness.
In 1984, Marc Garneau became the first Canadian astronaut to travel to space as part of a mission by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). From 2001 to 2006, he headed the Canadian Space Agency. In 2021, he was the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs for several months.
