Fraudsters began to lure Russians out of images of their faces, several cybersecurity companies told Izvestia.

Attackers disguised as sellers on the portal with ads are asking potential buyers to switch to a third-party messenger to communicate, Kaspersky Lab noted.

"They are sent a payment link that leads to a phishing site. After entering the card details on the fake page and transferring the money, the potential victim is asked to confirm his identity, ostensibly to complete the operation," the company noted.

The user is asked to provide the site with access to the device's camera and show their face from all angles. Then a notification appears asking you to close the page.

Attackers will then be able to use such images to steal accounts in those services where they are asked to verify their identity by video, added Olga Altukhova, senior content analyst at Kaspersky Lab.

This is a combined scheme where social engineering is used as a trick, said the head of BI.ZONE AntiFraud Alexey Luzhnov. The scammers will then be able to create fake documents and fake profiles on social networks using photos of the victims. In addition, biometric data that gets online can become a reason for blackmail or discredit with the help of deepfakes.
