The European Union (EU) has allowed the member states of the association to use hundreds of billions of euros allocated to combat COVID-19 for defense spending. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on June 4.

"The EU executive has informed the participating countries that they can redirect the remaining €335 billion allocated to eliminate the consequences of the COVID-19 epidemic to finance defense projects," the newspaper says.

It is noted that the EU countries need to achieve the agreed goals by August 2026 in order to receive the appropriate money from the Sustainability and Recovery Fund (RRF). The publication emphasizes that such a change indicates a "radical change in priorities" of the EU.

The High Representative of the UN Secretary General for the Alliance of Civilizations, Miguel Angel Moratinos, said on May 23 that the militarization of the political thinking of the EU countries is a dangerous trend. He stressed that the European community was created with the aim of establishing peace, so now Europe contradicts the ideas of the founders of the community, as the union returns to the production of weapons and military equipment.
