Members of the European Commission (EC) have proposed extending the temporary protection status for refugees from Ukraine in the European Union (EU) for one year, the commission's press service reported on June 4.

"The EC proposes to extend the temporary protection measures for another year — until March 4, 2027. This will provide legal certainty for those who enjoy temporary protection and for EU member states," the EC website says.

The European Commission also proposed to develop a strategy that, upon completion of temporary protection measures, would allow residents of Ukraine to receive asylum automatically. At the same time, it is noted that EU countries should prepare for the transition period for the termination of temporary protection measures and propose a plan for the return of refugees to Ukraine.

"Those who are considering returning home should make informed decisions. Member states should also establish voluntary return programs in close cooperation with the Ukrainian authorities to ensure the gradual return home [of refugees] after the end of temporary protection," the statement said.

The Politico newspaper reported earlier in the day that the European Commission is starting to develop a plan for the return of Ukrainians back to their country. They stressed that this should be done with caution in order to minimize the risks of sudden and large-scale displacement of people from one part of the region to another. Because the disorderly movement can put a lot of pressure on both Ukraine and, possibly, on EU countries.

On May 26, the Euractiv portal, citing diplomatic sources, reported that the EU was discussing the possibility of withdrawing from the EU Temporary Protection Directive, which allowed millions of Ukrainians to live and work in the community. It was clarified that this issue could be raised as early as June 12-13 at a meeting of the EU Council on Internal Affairs and Justice.
