The media learned about the development in the EU of a plan for the return of Ukrainians to their country

The European Commission (EC) is starting to develop a plan for the return of Ukrainians back to Ukraine. This was reported by Politico on June 4.

The EC stressed that it is necessary to act as cautiously as possible, using a coordinated approach aimed at minimizing the risks of sudden and large-scale displacement of people from one part of the region to another. The disorderly movement could put a lot of pressure on both Ukraine and, possibly, EU countries.

Brussels recommends that EU countries establish so—called unity centers, information centers that provide advice and support to those who are considering returning home, as well as help them find work in the host country or return to their homeland. Some of the first such centers will open in Germany and Spain.

About 4.3 million Ukrainian citizens live in the European Union, most of them in Poland, Germany and the Czech Republic, according to the publication. Initially, it was assumed that temporary protection programs would be limited in time, but they have been extended several times. Another one—year extension is currently planned, from March 2026 to March 2027.

"Ukraine needs its people more than anything else in the world," the newspaper quotes Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner as saying.

On May 26, the Euractiv portal, citing diplomatic sources, reported that the EU was discussing the possibility of withdrawing from the EU Temporary Protection Directive, which allowed millions of Ukrainians to live and work in the community. It was clarified that this issue could be raised as early as June 12-13 at a meeting of the EU Council on Internal Affairs and Justice.

The Washington Post newspaper, citing a draft internal document, reported on May 20 that the administration of US President Donald Trump intends to deport 200,000 Ukrainian refugees from the country who previously had temporary protection status.
