In Japan, the birth rate has been declining for the ninth year in a row, in 2024, less than 700 thousand people were born in the country for the first time in the history of observations. This was reported by Bloomberg on June 4.

"The birth rate in Japan declined in 2024 for the ninth year in a row, reaching another historic low, underscoring the enormous challenge facing the government. <...> The total number of births decreased to about 686 thousand. <...> The total number of deaths was about 1.61 million, which led to a net decrease in the population of about 919 thousand," the article says.

According to the publication, the total fertility rate decreased to 1.15 children per woman compared with 1.2 a year earlier and became the lowest rate in the history of observations since 1947.

The country's authorities are seriously concerned about the falling birth rate and are trying to take measures to improve the demographic situation, Bloomberg writes.

At the same time, it is clarified that the state pension program is experiencing a great burden in the country, as the number of working people is decreasing, and the number of pension recipients is growing.

The day before, it was reported that Vietnam had abolished a policy limiting the number of children in a family to two in order to stop the decline in the birth rate in the country. According to Bloomberg, the country's authorities allowed couples to decide for themselves when to have children and in what number.
