- South Korea's new president Lee Jae-myung has promised to overcome the split in society.

South Korea's newly elected president Lee Jae-myung was sworn in, promising to unite the nation, revitalize the economy and pursue pragmatic diplomacy. This was reported on June 4 by the South Korean Yonhap news agency.
"No matter who you supported in these elections, I will be president for everyone, to reach out to every citizen and serve them," he said in his inaugural address.
Lee promised to unite the country, which was deeply divided by his predecessor Yoon Seok-young's attempt to impose martial law in December 2024 and the subsequent impeachment.
"The time has come to restore security and peace, which have become instruments of political struggle, to restore livelihoods and an economy damaged by indifference, incompetence and irresponsibility, and to revive democracy, undermined by armored vehicles and machine guns," he said.
Regarding the economy, Li promised to adopt a "pragmatic and market-oriented" approach to revitalize its growth and promote advanced technologies, particularly artificial intelligence.
In his speech, the newly elected president stressed that he would strengthen South Korea's cooperation with the United States and Japan, as well as continue the dialogue on cooperation with the DPRK.
"We will open communication channels and continue dialogue and cooperation with the North (as the DPRK is called in South Korea. — Ed.) to build lasting peace on the Korean peninsula," he added.
On June 4, Lee Jae-myung, a candidate from the opposition Democratic Party of Korea, won the presidential election with 49.42% of the vote. His opponent, Kim Moon-soo, a presidential candidate from the Conservative People's Power Party, scored 41.15%.
