Alexey Kokorin, a climatologist and climate expert at the Nature and People Foundation, assessed the consequences of the eruption of Mount Etna in Sicily.

In conversation with aif.ru On Tuesday, June 3, the expert noted that even if the ashes reach the territory of Russia, it will not bring tangible consequences.

"For the eruption to affect the climate, the ash must reach the stratospheric layer — 11 km and above. And the ash from Mount Etna probably won't rise above 6-7 km," he explained.

According to Kokorin, volcanic activity will have no climatic or meteorological impact on the territory of the Russian Federation. Residents of Russia, according to the expert, will not notice it. The bulk of the ash will settle in Italy.

Earlier on June 3, volcanologist Pavel Plechov, professor of the Geological Faculty of Moscow State University, Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, in an interview with 360.ru He also said that the eruption of Mount Etna would not affect the air quality in Moscow. Plechov explained that this volcano spews quite heavy ash from a variety of basalt. He doesn't usually fly long distances.

The eruption of Mount Etna began on June 2. Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe. Earlier, in July 2024, it had already erupted, writes "Moscow 24". Etna released fountains of lava, a column of ash and smoke, IA Regnum notes. Although Mount Etna erupts quite often, lava has not reached nearby settlements for several decades. Tourists are not only not afraid to be nearby, but also specially climb Mount Etna to watch the eruption, RT reports.

On May 26, the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii spewed lava fountains over 300 m high. Kilauea is considered one of the most active active volcanoes on Earth, NSN notes.
