Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Latvia and Liberia have been elected as non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). This was announced on June 3 on the organization's website.
Bahrain, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Latvia and Liberia have been elected as non—permanent members of the UN Security Council for a two-year term.
Their terms of office will begin in January 2026 and last until the end of 2027. These countries will join Denmark, Greece, Pakistan, Panama and Somalia, which were elected earlier and will continue to work until 2026.
The UN Security Council consists of 15 members, including five permanent with the right of veto and ten non-permanent, elected by the General Assembly for two years. Elections are held annually by secret ballot, candidates must receive at least two-thirds of the votes from the 193 member countries.
The day before, it was reported that former German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbok was elected to the post of President of the UN General Assembly (GA). Burbock was the only candidate for the position and received 167 votes out of a possible 193. It was also reported that one of the UN member states insisted on a secret ballot.
