European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR Group) faction Fernand Kartheiser, a member of the European Parliament (EP) from Luxembourg, wants to be expelled from his ranks because of his recent visit to Russia. This was announced on June 3 by the Euractiv portal.

It is specified that Kartheiser visited Russia on May 25. He met with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs Grigory Karasin and Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs Leonid Slutsky.

"Fernand Kartheiser's trip to Russia last week was the last straw for the national Conservative ECR group in the European Parliament, which will expel him from its ranks on Wednesday [June 4]," the portal's publication says.

The deputy has already received an offer to join another political faction, but did not specify the name. It is assumed that this may be the Patriots of Europe party of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

On June 3, Kartheiser said that the European Union (EU) should stop demonizing Russia and start discussing existing problems with it. According to him, a dialogue between Europe and Russia is possible, and can also be carried out in an open and rational manner.
