Negative aura: is it possible to go crazy from migraines

The phrase "headache" does not mean for nothing not only a pain syndrome, but also serious life problems. Both literally and figuratively, this condition causes suffering, and it is not so easy to get rid of it. The main thing is that the pain does not become chronic. Whether it is possible to go mad or die from migraines is in the Izvestia article.
Migraine with aura
A headache is called "cephalgia" in medical parlance. It can be of varying degrees of intensity. Denis Prokofiev, a general practitioner, cardiologist, and holder of the "Moscow Doctor" status, notes that migraines are the highest level of pain.
"This chronic disease is associated with episodes of acute headache, which are accompanied by symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and visual impairment,— comments Prokofiev. — Migraines are based on a malfunction of the brain structures and an increased perception of nerve impulses.
A type of migraine is migraine with aura, when a severe headache is accompanied by additional symptoms — impaired coordination of movements, muscle weakness, tingling and even confusion.
— Aura (symptoms that occur on the background of a headache) can be visual, sensory, speech, or any other. Such a migraine lasts up to an hour or more, and it is not easy to get rid of it, warns Dr. Prokofiev.
"To make a diagnosis, we need to understand that this disease does not occur overnight,— Prokofiev continues. — If a patient goes to a doctor complaining of persistent headaches of various localization, then it is clear that this is not a single episode of headache on the background of psychoemotional stress, pressure or psychogenic stress, but a really chronic disease.
If you don't take care of your health, then a chronic headache turns into a migraine.
— There is a whole diagnosis that allows you to establish this diagnosis. In particular, this is an examination by a neurologist, magnetic resonance imaging to look for changes in the structure of the brain, as well as electroencephalographic examination of the brain," comments Dr. Prokofiev.
You don't die from migraines
The general practitioner emphasizes that, by and large, there is no headache that cannot be stopped, that is, eliminated.
— It is impossible to die from migraines — it is a painful impulse that is transmitted to the central nervous system through nerve fibers, — comments Denis Prokofiev. — But if we are talking about classic migraines, then the quality of life suffers greatly from it. Of course, it is impossible to live with pain all the time. Do not forget that there is pain shock, a condition that occurs when the body is overly exposed to pain.
According to Prokofiev, a person may simply physically be unable to withstand extreme pain. When it becomes extremely unbearable, and the proper effect of taking medications does not occur, the risk of suicide is not excluded. Therefore, it is important to seek medical help in a timely manner.
— The most important rule is to determine the cause of migraines, to exclude the presence of bulky formations of the brain and increased fluid content in the brain — the so—called increased intracranial pressure. And, of course, it is very important to monitor chronic diseases. For example, adequate therapy of hypertension, control of sugar levels, and treatment of pathology with atherosclerotic vascular plaques are necessary," comments Prokofiev.
An important role, according to the doctor, is played by the refusal to drink caffeinated beverages and the exclusion of nicotine.
— There are specially developed tactics in the treatment of migraines. At the first stage, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and muscle relaxants (a group of drugs that eliminate increased muscle tone) are used. To relieve severe seizures, a separate class of drugs called triptans is used," continues Dr. Prokofiev.
The golden rule is to be able to stop the signs of migraine and its symptoms in the early stages, the doctor notes. It is important to act on interception if you already know your diagnosis and the fact that he has recurrent disease.
— A migraine sufferer should literally take a medication in the first hours of the pain syndrome development that will relieve this pain. If you walk with migraine pains for a long time — a day, two, three, a month — then, of course, it will be very, very difficult to remove them further, the expert warns.
Against the background of migraines, even epilepsy can develop — these are rare cases, and they occur when the nervous system of the brain is in a constantly agitated state, says Denis Prokofiev. This agitated state and increased transmission of nerve impulses can lead to serious pathologies of the brain and central nervous system.
The headache always gets worse in the summer. According to Dr. Prokofiev, this is the result of the development of hypoxia of the brain against a background of reduced oxygen content.
"In addition, in severe sunlight, direct overheating of the brain will also lead to problems associated with an exacerbation of migraines,— the expert warns. — Therefore, it is necessary to stay in the shade whenever possible and protect your head, because an increase of just one degree in brain temperature can subsequently provoke critical conditions.
Is it possible to go crazy with pain
From the point of view of psychiatry, headache is assessed as a neurological symptom, says psychiatrist and psychotherapist Alexei Vilkov.
— In neurology, there is a diagnosis of "tension headache" — a condition that occurs precisely due to the influence of external stressful factors, — says Vilkov. — This is any external influence — stress, fatigue, overwork, conflicts in the family and at work.

That is, any emotionally significant event with a negative connotation causes such a psychosomatic symptom as a headache. From the point of view of psychotherapy, headache is a manifestation of negative emotions, Alexey Vilkov emphasizes.
— Under the influence of negative emotions, the muscles in the head area contract due to stress, and they squeeze the autonomic nerve endings, which causes pain. Therefore, tension headaches are most often pain in the forehead area when the muscles are tense," says Vilkov.
To cope with such pain, it is necessary to influence the cause, and this is external stress, which must either be dealt with or a change in attitude towards it.
"It is necessary to master well—known techniques of self—regulation and relaxation in order to effectively remove negative emotions," the psychiatrist suggests. — Auto-training, muscle relaxation, and meditation practices will help. And we need to gradually change our thinking in order to experience less in situations that cause negative emotions.
If you deal with the prevention of your emotional state, then gradually the symptoms of headache will decrease, the psychotherapist believes. When you actively work on yourself, you can in some cases completely free yourself from suffering even without taking medications.
Sometimes patients complain that their head is splitting so much that they can go crazy. Such pain can really lead to very severe suffering when its intensity goes through the roof.
