Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded the title of Hero of Russia to Priest Anthony Savchenko, who died in a special military operation zone while performing pastoral duties. The relevant decree was published on June 3 on the official Internet portal of legal information.

"For the courage and heroism shown in the performance of civic duty, award the title of Hero of the Russian Federation to Anton Savchenko," the document says.

The decree also clarifies that the priest was the assistant commander for work with the faithful of the 2nd separate brigade of the Leningrad Military District.

Savchenko's death became known on May 12. It was reported that he died as a result of a strike by the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) using the multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) HIMARS. The priest was 32 years old, he was a cleric of the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Pskov.
