The election of former German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbok to the post of Chairman of the UN General Assembly (GA) is cynical, given the past of her grandfather, who was an officer in the Wehrmacht. This was announced on June 3 by Alexei Martynov, a political scientist and associate professor at the Financial University under the Government of Russia.

It is specified that the inauguration should take place on September 9.

According to Martynov, Berbok's election should not be surprising after the appointment of former Estonian Prime Minister Kai Kallas to the post of head of EU diplomacy.

"The same story is happening with the appointment of Berbok, but with special cynicism, because she widely advertised her Nazi grandfather," the ambassador said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

He clarified that now everyone will be talking about her and her grandfather. Martynov also added that she was appointed to mock the founders of the United Nations, who called 80 years ago to prevent armed conflicts and prevent a repeat of the tragedy of the Second World War.

On May 15, Dmitry Polyansky, First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations, during an interactive dialogue with Berbok, said that Germany's decision to nominate Berbok as chairman of the UN General Assembly was a slap at the world organization.
