The Pentagon plans to include Greenland in the area of responsibility of the Northern Command of the US Armed Forces. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on June 3, citing American officials.

It is specified that Greenland may be excluded from the jurisdiction of the European Command of the US Armed Forces as early as this week. This decision could help the United States expand additional radars of the Golden Dome missile defense system by providing more radars for coverage.

"From the point of view of geography, this step makes some sense," the newspaper quoted one of the officials as saying.

He added that from a political point of view, this decision may cause concern in Europe.

Earlier, the administration of US President Donald Trump had been pointing out for several months the strategic importance of Greenland for the country's security, noting that its location in the North Atlantic was important for strengthening American missile defense programs and monitoring Russian and Chinese shipping in the Arctic.

In March, US Vice President Jay Dee Vance reported that the government expects Greenland to gain independence and join the United States peacefully, but clarified that he was not threatening to use military force.

On April 27, Greenland's new Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said at a press conference in Copenhagen after talks with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen that Greenland was ready to cooperate with the United States, but wanted respect and would never be owned by anyone.
