The United Nations (UN) welcomes the agreement between Russia and Ukraine on the exchange of prisoners, which was reached at the talks in Istanbul, the representative of the Secretary General of the organization, Stephane Dujarric, said on June 2.

"We welcome any agreement that will lead to the exchange of prisoners or remains of prisoners," he told reporters during a briefing.

The spokesman also expressed hope that negotiations between the two countries would lead to a "complete, immediate and unconditional" ceasefire, which would be the first step towards achieving lasting peace in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.

The second round of talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul ended earlier in the day. According to a source in Izvestia, they lasted more than an hour and were broadcast in Russian.

The head of the Russian delegation at the talks, Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Medinsky, said that Ukraine and Russia have agreed on the largest exchange of prisoners of war since the beginning of the special military operation, which will include at least 1,000 people from each side. In addition, the Russian side suggested that Ukraine declare a two- or three-day truce in certain sectors of the front to collect the bodies of the dead.
