A number of UNGA members tried to challenge Berbok's nomination for the presidency

Former German Foreign Minister Annalena Burbok scored "indecently few" votes for the post of President of the UN General Assembly (GA). This opinion was expressed on June 2 by Dmitry Polyansky, the first Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the United Nations.
According to him, Burbok's candidacy received 167 votes, which is an "indecently low" indicator for a candidate for such a high post. He stressed that traditionally, all regional groups decide to support a candidate unanimously, and he is not subsequently challenged.
"Nevertheless, there were many "rebels" who dared to challenge this point," Polyansky said, adding that the name of the original German candidate Helga Schmid was written on the ballots.
Polyansky noted that, despite the fact that Berbok's election was guaranteed, the result of the vote left a "serious residue" for her and Berlin.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that Burbok was elected to the post of chairman of the UN General Assembly. Burbock was the only candidate for the position and received 167 votes out of a possible 193. It is also reported that one of the UN member states insisted on a secret ballot.
