The eruption of Mount Etna in Italy, accompanied by the release of ash to a height of more than 6 km, does not pose a threat to the territory of Russia. Alexey Kokorin, an expert on climate issues at the Nature and People Foundation, told Izvestia on June 2.

The expert explained that the current eruption belongs to the Strombolian type, which is characterized by prolonged emissions of large rock fragments and local ash deposition in the immediate vicinity of the volcano. According to him, although significant ash deposition is indeed observed around Mount Etna, its long-range transport is unlikely.

As for the possible ingress of volcanic ash particles into the Moscow region, the climatologist denied this possibility.

"Some single microparticles can theoretically reach Moscow, but they will be completely invisible to the naked eye and will have no effect," Kokorin explained.

The expert stressed that the main impact of the eruption is limited to the territory of Italy, where the inevitable restrictions on air travel have already been introduced and problems may arise for the nearest settlements. However, this event will not have a global impact on the climate or the environmental situation outside the region.

"For Moscow and for Russia in general, Etna's activity is absolutely safe," the climatologist concluded.

On May 29, the Daily Star newspaper reported that volcanic activity experts are concerned about the increase in seismic activity in the area of the Campi Flegrei supervolcano, as its eruption "would plunge the planet into chaos."
