Former German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbok has been elected as the next president of the UN General Assembly. This was reported on June 2 by the German newspaper Tagesspiegel. "As President of the General Assembly, I will participate in a dialogue based on trust with all member countries. My door will always be open to everyone," Berbok said after the vote, which was broadcast on the official UN YouTube channel.

According to the newspaper, Burbock was the only candidate for the position and received 167 votes out of 193 possible. It is also reported that one of the UN member states insisted on a secret ballot.

It is reported that Burbok's inauguration is scheduled to take place on September 9.

On April 20, Focus magazine reported that Berbok's appointment to the post of chairman of the UN General Assembly could prevent Germany from joining the organization's Security Council. According to the newspaper's authors, Burbok is perceived as a pro-Israel politician in a number of African, Latin American and Asian countries.
