- The political scientist named the possible outcomes of the second round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine

Following the results of the second round of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul, a new agreement on the exchange of prisoners of war may be concluded, as well as statements of readiness to continue negotiations. This opinion was expressed by American political scientist Malek Dudakov on Monday, June 2.
"If we are talking about practical results, then I fully admit that we expect a new agreement on the exchange of prisoners of war, as it was at the first round, and perhaps a promise to continue the dialogue in the future. Obviously, the two memoranda, ours and the Ukrainian one, will not relate to each other very much," he said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .
According to the expert, it is unlikely to be possible to reach a compromise in one round of negotiations. But thanks to the preparation of the two memoranda, there is a space for dialogue, Dudakov added. He stressed that the texts would be very different from each other and contain unacceptable conditions. In addition, the political scientist admitted that the administration of US President Donald Trump would not be ready to support all the points of the Russian document.
"At least when you have two negotiating positions that have already been officially announced and fixed in some document, there is a chance that you will be able to work out a single document and strive for it," the political scientist said.
Dudakov noted that if the United States begins to publicly exert harsh pressure on Ukraine to stop the escalation, there is a chance that negotiations will lead to something in the long run. If the American side withdraws from the negotiation process, then there are not so many chances of reaching a compromise, he added.
Earlier in the day, the second round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine started at the Chiragan Palace in Istanbul, RT reports. The meeting was opened by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
The main topic of discussion remains the joint memorandum on the peaceful settlement of the Ukrainian conflict, reports NSN.
The first round of negotiations was held on May 16, IA Regnum reports. According to their results, Russia and Ukraine agreed to present their options for a cease-fire, as well as to exchange prisoners of war in accordance with the "1000 for 1000" formula. As a result, the exchange was completed.
