- The expert spoke about the decrease in the volume of parallel imports to the Russian Federation

The volume of parallel imports to Russia is indeed decreasing. This opinion was shared by Georgy Ostapkovich, Director of the Center for Economic Studies at the Higher School of Economics, in an interview with Izvestia on June 2.
Earlier, Roman Chekushov, State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, said that the monthly volume in monetary terms of imported products under the parallel import mechanism in the Russian Federation continues to decrease, Interfax reports.
"The dynamics of imports is very volatile. We can have two months of decline, and then two months of growth. There have already been such cases," Ostapkovich said.
According to him, buyers could take a break in anticipation of more favorable prices, as the ruble is now strengthening and imported goods are becoming cheaper.
He stressed that the slowdown in imports strengthens the ruble, as it reduces demand for foreign currency. However, this is an ambiguous trend for the population: about 30-35% of the consumer basket of Russians consists of imported goods, from household appliances to fruits.
"The key interest rate is currently being lowered, and people can temporarily keep money on deposits. But later, after receiving interest, they can actively buy imported equipment," the expert suggested.
At the same time, he added that the current reduction in the cost of imports makes its purchase profitable, so the situation may change in the coming months.
On May 18, First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov announced that the return of foreign brands to the Russian market is possible if it helps to increase competition. In his opinion, in such a situation, the Russian authorities can be guided by the principle of economic expediency.
