A court in Tver has sentenced 36 members of a criminal community who stole goods from railway trains worth more than 40 million rubles. This was reported on June 2 in the Investigative Committee (IC) of the Russian Federation.

It is specified that from 2017 to 2018, members of the community committed 13 cases of theft of goods that were in transit from European countries to CIS countries, totaling over 40 million rubles.

"The investigation and the court found that the accused joined together in a criminal community with the aim of systematically stealing goods from railway trains passing through the Rzhev station. To carry out their criminal plans, the organizers involved a senior employee of the October Railway dispatch service of Russian Railways, employees of locomotive crews, train guards and others in the community," the report says.

As noted by the official representative of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation Svetlana Petrenko, the activities of criminals were suppressed jointly with the operational staff of the FSB of Russia in August 2018. The evidence that was collected and presented in court as part of the investigative measures was found sufficient to convict 36 people. They were found guilty depending on their role in the commission of crimes in accordance with Parts 1, part 2 of art. 210, paragraphs "a", "b" of Part 4 of Art. 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Creation and participation in a criminal community", "Theft committed by an organized group on an especially large scale").

According to the court verdict, 11 people were sentenced to imprisonment for terms from seven to nine years. The other defendants were released from punishment, as they had already served their sentences as part of the previously chosen measures. One of their accomplices died before sentencing. Two more were found guilty earlier in connection with the conclusion of pre-trial cooperation agreements.

The FSB's Public Relations Center also released a video showing episodes of theft on a railroad in the Tver Region. The footage was captured with a hidden camera.

Earlier, on May 28, employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the city of Kyzyl opened a criminal case on the theft of 2.7 million rubles for the supply of 40 LiAZ buses. It is specified that 31 vehicles were delivered instead of 40.
