On Saturday, June 7, Orthodox believers celebrate the Ecumenical Trinity Parents' Saturday, a day of special commemoration for all the deceased, when those who live can mentally turn to those who have left, remember their good deeds, pray for the repose and express their love. For this holiday, Izvestia has collected a thematic selection of touching postcards and words filled with warmth.

Trinity Parents' Saturday is a special day in the Orthodox tradition, when not only relatives and friends are commemorated, but all Christians who have died since time immemorial. That is why it is called Universal: on this day, the prayers of the Church are addressed to all those who have completed their earthly journey in faith and hope for the resurrection — regardless of the time, place of life and degree of kinship.

On this common day of remembrance, even those whose names are unknown, who died during wars, natural disasters, catastrophes, went missing or were not ordained in church, are remembered at church services. The universal memorial service, held in churches, unites in prayer all those who live with those who have already gone to the Lord, thereby expressing the love and spiritual connection of generations.

The tradition of Trinity Saturday came to Russia from Byzantium, where there were "days of souls" — Saturdays dedicated to the commemoration of all the dead. This practice gained special significance among the Slavs. In the church calendar, Trinity Parents' Saturday has become one of the two main ecumenical memorial days, along with Meat and Easter Saturday. In 2025, it falls on June 7, on the eve of the feast of the Holy Trinity.

In the old days, Trinity Parents' Saturday was celebrated not only as a day of church commemoration, but also as an important event in popular culture. In Russia, it was customary to decorate houses and graves with greenery — birch branches, herbs, and flowers.

It was believed that these days nature is especially close to the spiritual world, and fresh greenery symbolizes the renewal of life and the connection between the worlds. The women took out cloths and towels, spread them in cemeteries, brought treats — kutia, pancakes, eggs — and, having gathered the whole family, remembered the deceased in silence and gratitude.

Over time, many of these traditions have been transformed. Today, as centuries ago, on Trinity Parents' Saturday, believers visit churches, light candles, serve notes with the names of the deceased, order memorial services and pray for the souls of all Christians who have died in the hope of resurrection and eternal life.

On this day, they also go to cemeteries, put the graves in order, decorating them with flowers and lamps. Although memorial ceremonies have become more restrained, the desire to express love, memory and prayerful concern for those who have passed away has remained. Families still gather for a modest meal, recite prayers, and share memories of their loved ones, thereby strengthening the spiritual bond between generations.

Traditionally, memorial dishes are served on the table. Among them are kutia, pancakes, sour and cabbage soup pies with various fillings. You can decorate the feast with live birch twigs, which are considered a symbol of the Trinity. They remind us of the oak grove of Mamre, where there was an oak tree, under which the Lord, the Holy Trinity, appeared to Abraham in the form of three angels.

At the same time, it is a great sin to speak ill of the deceased and even think ill of them. Memories of the dead should be accompanied only by kind words or silent prayer. According to beliefs, the soul of the deceased is able to feel even a slight negative coming from the living, and will suffer from it.

Despite the fact that Trinity Parents' Saturday is a sad holiday, this is not a reason to refuse traditional congratulations. Some people think that congratulations on this day are inappropriate. However, this is not entirely true. Since this is an Ecumenical Saturday, the commemoration of all the deceased, friends and strangers, is only welcome.

The easiest way to remember the celebration is to send a greeting card with warm wishes. They usually wish peace, happiness, harmony in the family, the repose of the souls of the dead and eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven.

It is better to choose themed postcards dedicated specifically to this memorial day. They often depict white doves, birch twigs, Orthodox crosses and temples, as well as images of the Holy Trinity, such as the icon of the same name by Andrei Rublev.

Especially for the celebration, Izvestia prepared touching congratulations with sincere wishes on Trinity Parents' Saturday in prose and poetry. They, like postcards, can be downloaded and shared with friends and family in messengers and social networks. For example, in Viber or WatsApp (owned by the recognized extremist Meta company, its activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation).
