The UK plans to urge the administration of US President Donald Trump to reduce trade duties on steel from the United Kingdom to zero. This was reported on June 1 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper, citing sources.

"UK Trade and Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds will next week call on the Donald Trump administration to conclude an agreement as soon as possible to reduce duties on UK steel exports to zero, even after the US president promised to double his global steel duties to 50%," the publication says.

At the same time, officials from the UK admitted that there is still no clear understanding of how the planned increase in duties on steel and aluminum imports on Wednesday (June 4) will affect the steel sector of the state.

"There remains uncertainty about whether and when our second largest export market will open for business, or whether it will be securely closed before our eyes," said Gareth Stace, CEO of the British Steel Manufacturers Association.

Earlier, on May 30, Trump announced a doubling of customs duties on imported steel. According to him, steel tariffs will be increased from 25% to 50% next week to further protect the U.S. steel industry from foreign influence and unfair competition.
