An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 was registered off the coast of the Japanese island of Hokkaido. This was announced on June 1 by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center.

The epicenter was located 53 km southeast of Hiroo with a population of 7.1 thousand people and 120 km southeast of the city of Obihiro with a population of 173 thousand people. The source was located at a depth of 33 km.

According to preliminary information, there are no casualties or damage, and no tsunami danger has been announced.

Earlier, on May 30, an earthquake of up to three magnitude was recorded in the Kuril Islands. The earthquake was felt in the Kuril and South Kuril regions in four localities.
